Common Reasons for Tooth Extraction

At Michael G. Dab DDS, we perform tooth extractions for customers in the Greater San Rafael, California. Though the ultimate goal is to keep your permanent teeth, there are many reasons as to why an extraction may be necessary for your dental care. Some reasons may include; trauma, severe infection or tooth decay, and crowding. Crowding is when there is not enough space in your mouth to accommodate all of your teeth. Wisdom teeth top the list of tooth extractions, particularly among teens and young adults.

X-rays for Wisdom & Other Teeth Before Extraction

A tooth extraction or removal, by Michael G. Dab DDS generally originates at the X-ray where the tooth in question is determined its condition of the surrounding bone and positioning of the tooth’s roots deep within the gum line. With the detailed X-rays, we can safely perform a tooth extraction and identify potential issues that could arise during the extractions.

Tooth Extraction Procedure

Following review of the X-rays, and the course of action has been developed, Michael G. Dab, DDS applies the local or general anesthetic to ensure the tooth extraction is as comfortable and pain free as possible. To minimize any bleeding, gauze is applied quickly after the careful and gentle removal of the tooth. In some cases, small stitches may be needed to ensure the gums heal quickly.

Tooth Extraction Aftercare & Healing Time

After your procedure, you will need to avoid smoking and using a straw for the first 24 hours, along with some foods such as rice, sunflower seeds, nuts, popcorn, and other such foods. Eat with the other side of your mouth and choose softer foods. Follow directions associated with antibiotics and care to ensure efficient healing. You can gradually resume your normal diet; including eating solid foods once you start to feel better. Within a few days, everything should be back to normal. However, be sure to contact Michael G.
